"I visited War Eagle Mining Co. germanium and zinc mine in Chihuahua. It turns out that germanium is a very rare metal used in fiber optics and night location devices and so on. Their Tres Marias Mine---high-grade zinc, high grade germanium---is very attractive. This is really an interesting play, and I think it's going to worth an awful lot of money. The stock is about 40 cents today---very cheap---and it's a stock that should be considered. In addition to the Tres Marias Mine in Chihuahua, there are a number of other targets that look like they're germanium as well, so it's a very interesting play and a good team." (3/25/08)

FOCUS War Eagle Mining seeks to take advantage of soaring germanium demand Chihuahua, Mexico
    Publisher: Thomson Financial
    Author: Julie Crust
Canadian mining junior War Eagle Mining Co Inc is looking to take advantage of rising demand for germanium, a rare metal with many properties similar to silicon, when its flagship Tres Marias mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, resumes production.

Prices for germanium have risen dramatically over the past four years to around 1,350-1,400 usd a kilogramme as demand has outstripped supply. The rapid growth of technology has meant that materials other than silicon must be used to meet the industry's requirements and demand for germanium is predicted to continue to increase significantly, especially from China, in the near future.

Germanium is mainly used in fibre optic cables, as a polymerization catalyst in the production of clear plastics used in the packaging industry, and in infrared night vision sensors for ships, aircrafts, missiles, and increasingly luxury automobiles. In fact, military spending has been a strong component of growth in the germanium market.

Production from Tres Marias, located just south of the border with Texas, could restart at the end of 2009. An independent geologist has stated that the Tres Marias concession area has the potential to host 5-10 mln tons of mineable ore and that the very high-grade germanium content of the ore means the mine could provide about 10 pct of the world's germanium needs.

The company expects to have an in-house resource estimate within two months and a NI 43-101 compliant estimate, recognized by Canadian and US stock exchanges, by the end of the second quarter.

Drilling samples so far from the wholly owned mine give an estimated average grade of 130 grammes a ton of germanium and 15 pct zinc, rising to 151 grammes a ton of germanium and 19 pct zinc at a 5 pct zinc cut-off grade.

The company estimates that it will cost about 30 mln usd to bring the mine back into production.

It has sufficient financing for now but will look to raise about 5-10 mln cad by the end of the year, said president Terence Schorn. He does not anticipate any problems in raising the additional financing, even amid the credit crisis, as the company has the support of its large shareholder in the US.

War Eagle has been trading on the TSX Venture Exchange in Canada since 1987 and has a market capitalization of about 22 mln cad (11 mln stg). However, once the mine gets going the group will look at listing on the big board in Toronto, New York, or London, possibly as early as next year, Schorn said.

The company has explored about a third of the Tres Marias concession, which totals about 28 square kilometres, and has identified 86 exploration targets of which three have been given a high priority status.

War Eagle bought the concession in 2001 during a period of depressed metal prices. Germanium, as well as other more obscure metals such as molybdenum (used as hardening agent for steel) and indium (used in LCD screens) has also benefited from the general commodities price boom. Only a small proportion of germanium is used in applications meaning that demand for the metal is fairly inelastic to price changes.

Germanium's main use globally, at about 31 pct, is as a catalyst for the clear plastic polyethylene terephthalate, while fibre optics and infrared consumption account for about a quarter each of its use. The element is also found in solar cells, where it is more efficient in converting solar heat into electricity than silicon, and in faster and more efficient semiconductor chips.

Argentium Silver Co is also looking at using germanium as a new silver alloy that is nearly tarnish proof and can still carry the .925 sterling silver trademark. If Argentium is successful in capturing 50 pct of the sterling market, it would consume 37,000 kilograms of germanium a year.

Keith Knobelauch, a germanium expert at Murdock Capital Partners, estimates germanium demand at about 120-130 tons a year, while supply is estimated at about 100-110 tons per annum. China produces about 80 pct of the world's germanium but is keen to keep the material for its own strategic requirements and has added the element to its list of restricted exports.
Knobelauch also estimates that recycling accounts for about 25-30 pct of supply.

War Eagle has its own plans to recycle the metal and expects its first germanium production to come from fly ash, one of the residues from burning lower grade coal.

Last November, it signed a provisional agreement with Elcogas SA of Spain regarding the testing of fly ash from its Puertollano power plant with the aim of recovering germanium and gallium. The plant currently produces about 12,000 tonnes of fly ash per year and the output could increase to 15,000 tonnes.

At the time, War Eagle said a maximum of 18 months had been allowed for test work and a full feasibility study and that if the results are commercially viable it planned to start constructing a production plant. However, the company now anticipates production starting as early as this year or the beginning of next year.

The company is also looking a similar projects in China, Saskatchewan and Australia.

War Eagle also has a number of other mineral projects including gold, tantalum, tin, and lithium.

James Passin of Firebird Management LLC Highlights War Eagle in Recent Interview
February 2008 - James Passin of Firebird Management LLC, which manages $3.8 billion in eight funds, highlighted War Eagle in a recent interview with The Gold Report of Streetwise Reports. In the interview, Mr. Passin gives his thoughts on current opportunities in germanium and other strategic metals. "It's as exciting to me now as the uranium exploration and production story was five years ago," he says. Mr. Passin, the portfolio manager of Firebird Global Master Fund II, Ltd., recognized the powerful drivers behind the nuclear renaissance early on, and has made considerable investments in the areas of uranium, fluorine, and germanium.

James Passin Comments

TGR: Any other metals you'd like to talk about?

PASSIN: Germanium has unique physical properties and is used in fiber-optics and night vision equipment. In a profound way, germanium is tied into U.S. military dominance. It is also used in LED lighting; LED lighting will benefit from the new U.S. bill phasing out the light bulb.

Germanium is usually produced as a byproduct of zinc; the principal source of germanium is Chinese zinc smelters. But China has just imposed a tax and quota system on a number of minerals and metals, including germanium. A trader was just quoted as saying that there really is no germanium in the spot market at any price.

The Defense Department, oddly enough, is one of the world's principal suppliers of germanium. For the same inexplicable, and indefensible, reason that the U. S. military sold the beryllium stockpile, the U.S. military is selling the germanium stockpile. The Pentagon is currently reevaluating its metal stockpile strategy, which could eliminate or reverse Defense Department sales.

There's one company that has represents an interesting play on germanium --- War Eagle Mining (TSX.V:WAR). It is developing the Tres Marias Zinc and Germanium Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico. The management is focused on tying up germanium when nobody is really thinking about the metal's importance.
